FAQ
Each of my books is handcrafted in my studio with thoughtful details and high-quality materials. From archival papers to upcycled leathers and my signature hand-painted paste papers, every journal or notebook is designed to be both functional and artistic. Below you’ll find answers to the most common questions about my handmade books, materials, and policies.
Do you make each of these books by hand?
Yes, I do! I use a large guillotine cutter to prepare the book boards for covers and spines, and to trim multiple sheets of paper at once so pages are uniform in size. Each page is then folded and sewn by hand with linen thread, using the appropriate binding format. I personally cut and glue the book cloth, paste paper, end sheets, and leather for every book. It’s a meticulous process, but one I truly love—for both the craft and the final result.
What type of paper do you use?
I work with several types of high-quality, archival papers:
- Text Weight Papers: Slightly heavier than copy paper, ideal for everyday writing and drawing.
- Watercolor Papers: Hot press and cold press in multiple weights, including US Art Supply Cold Press Acid-Free 90lb. (a very light lavender) and white Fabriano papers.
Each book listing specifies the paper type, so please review descriptions carefully to ensure you get the surface best suited to your needs.
Do I need a special pen?
- Text weight paper: Works well with ballpoint, Micron pens, rollerballs, fountain pens and pencil.
- Watercolor paper: Suitable for watercolor, gouache, ink, fountain pens and mixed media.
Where do you get your leather?
All leather used in my small pamphlet-style notebooks is upcycled. I repurpose leather from old clothing or use samples from furniture catalogs—giving new life to existing materials while keeping my work sustainable.
Are your books refillable?
Currently, the binding styles I specialize in are not refillable. I hope to design a refillable option in the future, but for now, each book is created as a one-of-a-kind keepsake.
What makes your books unique?
Every book features my handmade paste paper—a one-of-a-kind art process I create in my studio.
- No two designs are ever the same. I experiment with colors, pastels, stamps, and tools so each sheet is completely original.
- Even when multiple books are made from the same sheet, the section of paper used makes each cover unique.
- For leather notebooks, paste paper is used as a hidden lining inside the cover, creating a delightful surprise when the book is opened.
What is paste paper?
Paste paper is a traditional decorative technique that involves mixing cooked paste with acrylic paint, then applying it to damp paper. While still wet, I use gesso, chalk pastels, and hand tools to create patterns and textures—much like finger painting but more refined.
This process ensures no two sheets of paste paper are ever alike, making every handmade book a true piece of art.
